But then the two-finger gestures on the trackpad stopped having any effect. So I drew a fresh rectangle over the top of it.Īnd I accidentally did a two-finger swipe, and enlarged it greatly. Perhaps there is something about selecting which I've not learned yet? I thought I'd delete the useless microscopic line, but although I could make it yellow or green I couldn't find a way to delete it. Clicking again seems to enlarge it very slightly, and it moves to the left a bit.Īt the bottom of the screen there is text saying "36.90 x 19.10 mm" Somehow the drawing shrank to nothing, and having got it to show big enough to click on a line (can't remember how I did that, and cannot repeat it) I find that the line is 1.284 microns in length! Clicking on the magnifying glass at top left shrinks it down to microscopic again. Now there is a line tool at the RH end of the skeleton cubes row, but no other drawing tool, no rectangle.Īh! I increased the window size, and now I can see the rest of the drawing tools, plus I've spotted that the row beneath (editing tools?) goes live uner some conditions when I click on a line. Quick to ask for a "new" from the File menu, I now realise that that doesn't count for anything until I click on the "Create a new or edit the selected sketch" icon (which is now up on the row with the skeleton cubes). Then I returned to FreeCAD to retrace some steps and confirm what I was writing. word-processing (words or paragraphs), or Spreadsheet (cells). Command-click permits you to select a non-contiguous series of things in e.g. This is rather distracting, because it is very contrary to the Mac convention. After some experimentation I discovered that I needed to Command-click to increment a selection. I then guessed that I needed to select the rectangle to extrude it, so I went around, clicking on the first side, then shift-clicking on the others. (I didn't do item 3 in the list - "close Sketch" because I didn't know how to or what it meant - but I changed workbench from Sketcher to Part Design, in case that was what it meant?) So far (another 30 mins or so) I haven't found a way to edit the line or the rectangle, so I gave up on that, and settled for the next item in the table of instructions under "Working with the PartDesign and Sketcher workbenches" (page 15 of the pdf). So I drew a line, then I drew a rectangle, and got the Rectangle to touch the line. Can I confidently use 10.6? I saw a reference somewhere to 10.7 being required, but I'm reluctant to upgrade because then I'll have to stop using Eudora! I work with OS 10.6.8, and I wondered for a while whether the trouble I was having or the absence of help etc was due to my old operating system, but of course the latter was due to my rural internet connection. And lo! I can draw my first line.īut might I suggest that the instructions make this more obvious - or perhaps if you have no file active choosing a drawing tool creates an 'untitled' file? Then I spotted the icons below the point, arc, circle etc row, and I found that clicking on that got me a more promising-looking screen. Eventually I came across an instruction (from the tutorial) to start a new file, but that didn't let me draw. But then it took me half an hour or more (actually, more, because my internet connection went flaky after thirty minutes!) to figure how to draw my first line. I downloaded everything ok, and read the first sections of the pdf. Hi, I thought it might be helpful if I pass on my experience as a newcomer (previously used ClarisCAD, SketchUp).
